Living in the Middle East, I get a lot of questions asking me which types of clothes to bring with them on holidays to either Qatar or the U.A.E, so I thought I would share with you the essentials, the do's and the don'ts!
Swim Wear
This is always a massive concern to people, are you allowed to wear bikinis, and what kind of beach wear is tolerable?.... I say... wear what you would normally wear. Avoid overly revealing swimwear, thongs for instance are not appreciated, (they get a lot of stares from the WAG's of Doha down at the Intercon!) and to go topless goes without saying, it's a definite no no! Cover up your swimwear with shorts, a summery dress, kimono or playsuit. And don't forget your sunglasses and sun lotion.
What to take for day time really depends on what time of year you go. In the height of summer it can get very chilly indoors, and during the winter can feel quite chilly outside. So perhaps throw in a jumper for good measure whenever you go! As a general rule, I would say cover at least your shoulders or your knees.... and no crop tops, as I have been told off for this before!
In the U.A.E, you can get away with showing a little more leg so opt for basic holiday attire such as denim shorts, summery dresses etc. If visiting Qatar you will need to dress more conservatively, so opt for maxis, midis and kimonos to keep covered.
Night Wear
What to wear during the evening is actually very easy. Pretty much anything goes! So throw your body-con dress, disco pants, midi skirt.... whatever you like in your case!
I hope this gives you a little more insight into the types of outfits you are allowed/expected to wear. Avoid pushing the boundaries, and if in particularly cultural places i.e. souqs or areas near a mosque, remember to respect the Islamic culture and keep covered!
I love all the swimwear colours. those sandals are amazing, not sure i can afford them with winter coming so soon though!
